The First Horse Show ~ 1941

The First Annual Napa Valley Horsemen’s Association Horse Show was held on Sunday April 20,1941 at the Napa Fairgrounds. There were 121 horse entered in thirteen classes ranging from hunters / jumpers to polo ponies to five gaited horses. There were 125 horses entered for this very first horse show and it was very well organized. Wanting to include as many people and horse into the show there a children’s class with a cash prize for First Place of $2.50 at the local harness shop. There were 12 entries for the Children’s class. And just for fun the last class of the day was Musical Chairs with Ladies and Gentlemen pairs.
In
the Five Gaited class there were two entry both by Charolette B.
Anderson of Pleasanton. There was Hackney horse demonstration but no
class was offered. As an added incentive to exhibitors, there was no
charge for their box stalls at the fair grounds.

Dorothy Arruda, a founding member, was the first Show Secretary and was the Show Secretary for the Silver Anniversary show in 1966 and served as Show Secretary in 1971, which was her last show as secretary. After 32 years of service Dorothy now could just enjoy the shows
